My shaken brain
Auburn Hills, September 9, 1999
Summer's here, and the time is right. I have seen the Republicanized
Lewinsky'd masses reduced to balls of pure brain shaking sweat. I have
heard the secretaries of the universe preach the gospel. And, in all I
have seen and heard this past night, there was no mortality to raise its
ugly head.
And this is what I have seen and heard:
- I have seen the master's hands on the hoary guitar through many extended
guitar solos.
- I have heard unexpected high notes and giggles during Two Hearts.
- I have seen sixty-somethings dance on their seats.
- I have heard the woman next to me scream out "Red Headed Woman!"
- I have seen her hair.
- I have heard the words to Point Blank.
- I have seen the pointy follow-the-bouncing-ball finger sing those words.
- I have heard the master ask to be where the fans are.
- I have seen where the fans are.
- I have heard my brains being shaken.
- I haven't seen them lately.
- I have heard the gospel of the ministry being preached.
- I have seen it preached from the top of a grand piano.
- I have heard the mighty drum man play.
- I have seen the master throw water on the mighty drum man.
- I have heard the best goddam off the cuff rendition of
Jenny Take a Ride! since... since... a long f****** time ago.
- I have seen many shaking brains during this time.
- I have heard thousands of people sing Backstreets.
And I blame it all on Bruce, and it don't matter to me now.
And after all I have seen and heard, I commit myself to more prayer and
repentence and charity for 10 days or more. Then I may get to go to
Philadelphia. I intend to find my shaking brain there, later this month.
